Excess fat can often be unnecessary, but in the case of breast augmentation, a patient’s own fat can be helpful to reshape the body. Breast implants are also an option for women who are looking to enhance the shape of their breasts. It may be worth learning about both fat transfer and breast implants to find out which is more appropriate for your situation.
Dr Colin Tham is a plastic surgeon who answered a question from a Human reader about fat transfer versus breast implants. Here are some key takeaways.
How does fat transfer work?
As the name suggests, fat transfers (also known as fat injection or fat grafting), involves sculpting the body’s proportions and contours by removing fat from the body and injecting it into another part. This can be done on small or larger sections of the body, and even on the face. [1]
Fat transfers can be used instead of breast implants
Choosing a fat transfer procedure over breast implants for breast augmentation or reconstruction is possible. Sometimes, fat transfer and breast implants can be done as complementary procedures.
Both approaches aim to improve the shape of the breast, but there are key differences between the two that are worth considering. [2]
The cost of fat transfer and breast implants is comparable
The costs for both procedures are comparable. Do, however, consider the components of any plastic surgery cost, including:
- anaesthesia fees,
- ward fees,
- your surgeon’s and operating theatre fees,
- consultations,
- medications,
- and follow-up appointments.
Fat transfers are not for everyone
A slim patient may want significant augmentation for her breasts but may not have sufficient fat to transfer to achieve a C-cup and above. In such cases, breast implants may be a safer option. [3]
Patients need adequate fat to achieve the results they want
When it comes to fat transfers, patients need enough fat to reach the desired cup size. Fat transfers usually result in softer, more natural-looking breasts that may change shape and position gradually with age. [4]
Implants do not change shape as easily, but may feel firmer
Fifth generation breast implants have a wider variety of surface textures and implant shapes, and can result in larger enhancements.
During this stage of breast implant innovations, anatomically shaped implants with cohesive gel were introduced in the 2010s. However, they may seem slightly firmer than natural breasts. [5]
What is post-liposuction dimpling?
An irregular dimpling appearance may occur after liposuction where fat is extracted. It can be caused by:
- stretch marks,
- excess and sagging skin,
- or an inexperienced surgical team.
Corrective or revision procedures may need to be done after that. [6]
Do not rush into a fat transfer procedure
In order to reduce surgical complications and make proper decisions, patients can opt for a full physical evaluation.
It may be good to know that autologous fat transfer is not associated with an increased rate of breast cancer relapse, if you are thinking of a fat transfer for reconstructive purposes. [7] Breast implant safety has been increasing as well.
Do find a surgeon experienced in the treatment you are exploring before proceeding with any plastic surgery procedure. Assessing the risks of any possible complications can help you with your treatment option selection.
