I just want to be prepared...

For many women, especially those of Asian ethnicity, they prefer more conservative approaches to slim the face. Often, they shy away from surgical treatments. In fact, it is perfectly fine to consider surgery as a last resort or to even avoid it completely! When it comes to face slimming, developments in aesthetic medicine have allowed for various non-surgical approaches.

In my practice as an aesthetic doctor, I focus primarily on aesthetics and have answered many questions on Human from readers looking for face slimming treatments. In this article, I will share with you a few options you can try before considering surgery.

What are the factors that lead to a broader face?

First and foremost, a broad face can be caused by several factors. They include:

  • natural facial structures such as chubby cheeks and prominent jaw bone structure,
  • hypertrophied jaw and
  • a weak chin.

Ageing-related changes brought on by gravitational descent and volumetric changes can also result in a broader, lower face. [1]

Can neurotoxins help with facial slimming?

Masseters are the muscles in charge of controlling the act of chewing around the jawline. Depending on the final evaluation from your doctor, neurotoxins like Botulinum toxin (Botox) and Xeomin help to relax the masseter. As a result, injecting Botox aids in reducing the bulk and your face slims down.

For aesthetic purposes, neurotoxins such as Botox can be used. It intercepts the release of the chemical that is responsible for muscle contractions. Botox can be administered by a trained doctor. It helps to achieve a slimmer lower face.

Results of the treatment may take approximately 3 weeks to show and can last for an average of 3 to 6 months. However, do be cautious with the amount of Botox used. A large amount of Botox injected may cause muscle paralysis. [2]

Can fillers augment my chin for a V-shaped effect?

fillers on the chin

In addition to neurotoxins, chin augmentation through the use of fillers such as Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can create a more pointed look. HA fillers are commonly used as they are a non-permanent option and can be dissolved if the effect is not desired. In addition, HA fillers give a natural-looking result that can last for 9 months or more, making it a cost-effective option if you want to maintain the result [3].

Can HIFU devices mould the final appearance and appeal of the face?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) devices such as the Ultraformer III could be used to contour the jowls as well as the lower face. This treatment results in a more appealing overall look to the face. However, patients should always consult their doctor before undergoing the treatment to see if this approach is suitable for their skin. [4]

How else can fillers benefit my face?

Apart from augmenting the chin with fillers, it can also be used to contour and shape the lower face. Fillers can also be used to replace lost collagen in the skin due to natural causes such as ageing. They are able to lift the skin and reveal a tighter and smaller face.

Finally, HA fillers or calcium hydroxyapatite fillers like Radiesse can be used to contour the jawline to give it a V-like definition.

However, this procedure may require some time to complete. Furthermore, it should be done by an expert as precise applications are needed in order for results to show. [5]

Thread lifts can create a V-shape look too!

Like fillers, thread lifts help to contour the face for a V-shaped effect. Thread lifts also use PDO threads that dissolve into the body after a period of time.

Thread lift tightens and lifts the sagging skin. Hence, it helps to achieve an effect of younger-looking skin. However, there is a downside to this treatment. It involves a considerable amount of downtime after the treatment. Be sure to consult your doctor if you are planning to undergo this treatment! [6]

What can be done about my chubby cheeks and double chin?

HIFU devices have been used more recently to reduce the subcutaneous fat in the jowl as well as the submental areas in order to slim down the face. Devices that induce some form of lipolysis in the submental area such as Coolsculpting and in more recent times, Trusculpt ID, can also be used.

What can I do about my squarish jaw?

In some cases, those with broader faces brought on by squarish jawbones may require a jaw surgery at the end of the evaluation. While there are various options that you can try before going under the knife in order to get a slimmer face, it’s best that you consult your doctor for a full evaluation and get his/her expert opinion on your situation.
