I was referred to Dr Julian Tan from the hospital A&E for chest discomfort and hyperventilation. He is a professional, attentive and very assuring heart specialist. He ordered comprehensive tests to check for heart disease. The test results were good but I was still having discomfort. After other tests, the results found that I had an onset of cervical spondylosis and gastric reflux, I was referred to an orthopedic dr and physiotherapy. Im thankful that he followed through go find the cause of my other health issues even after clearing the heart issues.

In Singapore, 17 people die from cardiovascular disease (heart diseases and stroke) every day. Did you know that in 2017, cardiovascular disease accounted for 30.1% of all deaths?

Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease in many industrialised countries. It happens when plaque builds up in your coronary artery, causing it to become narrow. This results in reduced blood flow, and thus oxygen supply to the heart.

People with this condition often suffer from chest pains and shortness of breath.

To allow blood flow to more freely, a coronary angioplasty surgery is performed. This procedure uses tiny balloons or a tiny wire mesh tube called a stent to prop open arteries that are blocked.

Watch the video to understand the coronary angioplasty surgery and find out who needs to undergo this procedure.

In 2016, statistics showed that cardiovascular disease accounted for 29.5 per cent of all deaths. This means that nearly 1 out of 3 deaths in Singapore is due to heart diseases or stroke.

Heart disease and stroke combined, is also the leading cause of death among women in Singapore but many are still unaware of the dangers posed by this “silent killer”.

Join Dr Julian Tan, an accomplished cardiologist, as he hosts a QnA session where he answers all the questions you might have about heart disease.

You may be surprised by the lack of information available on the speciality field of practice called cardiology. This may be because Singaporeans often take action only after cardiovascular disease strikes. However, this sit-and-wait approach to heart health is not good enough - I've seen too many young men and women pass on in their prime due to heart disease.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve often had friends and family ask me how they can find a suitable and trustworthy heart specialist for all their heart health needs.

So I have put together this guide about the practice of cardiology in Singapore, which provides an overview of topics such as:

  • When you need to see a heart specialist
  • The different types of heart doctors in Singapore
  • How to find the best heart specialist in Singapore who caters to all your heart health needs
  • The cost of seeing a cardiologist in Singapore, and whether treatment is insurance or Medisave claimable.

Angiogram and angioplasty are fairly common medical terms you might hear. Most people, however, do not know their differences and functions.

The cardiovascular system is a complex network of vessels that facilitate blood circulation and transport nutrients to and from the heart. It is an integral part of our life and is made up of sophisticated processes. As with its importance, various ways to treat and monitor its wellbeing have been developed. Cardiologist, Dr Julian Tan, explained some of their key differences between angiogram and angioplasty to DoctorxDentist readers.
