Overview

Dr Fong Yang, an accredited Ministry of Health IVF clinician, has been practicing Obstetrics and Gynaecology for the past 18 years. He received his medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1990, and went on for further specialisation training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. Dr Fong was admitted to the Fellow of Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2000.

He is also one of the rare few IVF clinicians who treat both male and female infertility. He was the first in Singapore to perform percutaneous sperm aspiration for men – a procedure to overcome a condition whereby sperm cannot be produced due to obstruction of the sperm ducts.

Prior to setting up his private practice in 2002, Dr Fong was a consultant at Singapore General Hospital and Changi General Hospital, where he served in the O & G and Andrology clinics.

Dr Fong was also active in the Centre for Assisted Reproduction in SGH and in their In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) programmes. Currently, he also performs Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI) for women as part of their fertility treatment.

Besides male and female infertility, Dr Fong also keenly manages recurrent and early pregnancy loss or miscarriages.

Dr Fong is very passionate about his field of specialisation and often shares his expertise at local and international forums. He is also an avid contributor to numerous magazines, newspapers, and makes media appearances to educate and increase awareness of male and female fertility issues.

He is effectively bilingual in English and Mandarin, and also conversant in Hokkien and Teochew.

Hi Tina, Thanks for the D2D. A fertility assessment would start with a detailed history of both you and your partner/spouse. This would serve to shed light on your general health, existing medical problems (if any), and issues specific to your chances of conception. A physica...

Hi Sheena, Thanks for the D2D. IVF is one end of a spectrum of fertility treatment options, and it is usually used when all other methods have not worked. There are simpler means of conceiving, from ultrasound scans to tracking egg development and timing of ovulation, pills t...

Hi Sharlyn, Thanks for the D2D. Stress is inevitable in modern society, and especially so in a place like Singapore. We know from research that prolonged or chronic stress is bad for health, be it fertility or mental health or even general well-being. We have to acknowledge t...

Hi Marie, Thanks for the D2D. This really depends on the reason why you had to do IVF in the first instance. If IVF was done because you felt it was the fastest way to have a baby, or if you failed to conceive naturally even though no obvious cause was found, then the next pr...

Hi Jia Yun, Thanks for the D2D. Most fertility doctors in Singapore are very well trained, so you will be in good hands. You may want to meet with the doctors and discuss your issues. That way you can also have a feel of each doctor’s approach to your needs; it is impor...

Dear Neha, In general, there are a few considerations that we will look at for natural birth in overweight mothers: 1. Stage of your pregnancy 2. Size of your baby 3. Position of your baby 4. Presence of existing medical conditions or complications such as diabetes, p...

Hi Jen, Thanks for the D2D. Both methods can be effective, but a lot depends on your medical condition and the causes of your subfertility in the first place. IUI is relatively simple, less invasive, less costly and less time-consuming, but the success rates are lower. Certai...

Hi Stephany, I assume that by “endometrial biopsy” you refer to a minor procedure you did in the clinic, where your gynaecologist has taken a small amount of tissue from your womb lining for tests? If so, the discomfort and blood-stained discharge usually clea...

Hi there. It is interesting that your left ovary has “lower capacity” than your right. Have you had some form of surgery to the left ovary before? Sometimes it is difficult to say that 1 ovary has less function than the other, based only on 1 cycle of SO-IUI. Ovari...
