About Dr Mahesh Choolani

Professor Mahesh Choolani is one of Singapore’s leading Obstetricians & Gynaecologists with a special interest in high-risk pregnancy care and foetal medicine. He believes deeply that the best patient outcomes are delivered by clinicians who care for their patients as if they were family: that each patient should be treated as if she were a sister, a mother or a daughter.

Professor Choolani impresses the same ideals upon the young doctors he interacts with every day. He serves as a faculty lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore and as an Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the National University Hospital (NUH) where he leads the High-Risk Pregnancy Unit of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division.

Professor Choolani maintains an active academic role, heading the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Programme at NUS, where all research is specifically directed to benefit patients and better women’s health. One of his team’s most recent and notable breakthroughs is FlashFISH™, a rapid diagnostic test performed at amniocentesis that can detect Down’s Syndrome in unborn babies within a few hours – this technology has put Singapore on the world map as being the first country to offer Same-Day Prenatal Diagnosis.

It took a long time and a village to deliver our baby boy safely into the world. Thanks Dr Choolani for leading an amazing medical team and for watching my numbers like a hawk. You were decisive, compassionate, sensitive and kind.

I had a really bad experience with him. Questions were never answered properly. No advice or direction was given during the pregnancy. During hospitalization, he was absent when we needed treatment. Occasionally he would walk in for 2 min, and later bill us exorbitantly for that 2 m...
