Meet Mdm Pan Mei Yun, a Singaporean lady who's suffered from knee pain for more than a decade.
10 years ago, she often experienced numbness and pain in both her hands and legs. After a thorough medical examination, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease where a person's immune system mistakenly attacks their own joints.
Someone who suffers from this condition will develop permanently inflamed joints over time. Over time, these inflamed joints can eventually result in bone erosion and joint deformity.
In Mdm Pan's case, the pain was so crippling that she found it difficult to go about with her daily tasks. She could hardly walk to the toilet, let alone shower while standing. She had to be seated on a chair when she took her bath.
Her doctor advised her to go for a knee replacement surgery to relieve her pain, and to help restore the function of her joints.
Total knee replacement surgery
Studies have shown that a total knee replacement has been established as one of the most successful surgical interventions for reducing pain and enhancing physical function in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
