I’m prescribed to consume Acnotin 10 daily to reduce my forehead acne. Can I do IPL underarm treatments while on the medication?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thank you for the question.

There have been studies that have been done to show that is safe to do IPL for hair removal while on isotretinoin. Doing IPL while on isotretinoin (acnotin) can be considered but it is still best to discuss this with your attending doctor.

Do I need to see a dermatologist for itchy, red patches on my face?

Thanks for question. It does sound like you are having some jawline acne. I do see this very often in women and this is usually related to hormonal factors. The acne breakout commonly occurs around the mouth and on the jawline areas. You have also described itchy, dry and flaky red patches on the cheeks and eyelids and this sound like possible eczema on the face as well. This can be due to underlying sensitive skin or can be aggravated by use of harsh products. I do think that it would be good for you to see the dermatologist to get both conditions attended to.

Does a low dosage isotretinoin course which falls below the recommended total cumulative dosage increase the chance of a relapse?

There is a cumulative therapeutic dose in the range of 120mg – 140mg/kg that some doctors adhere to in the bid to reduce the relapse of acne. Sometimes, doctors may prescribe lower doses (with lower side effects) until the acne has cleared and continue the course for a few more months after. It really depends on the prescribing doctor as each has his/her own protocol. If you find that you are still having relapses with lower doses then discuss with your doctor the option of a course to achieve the therapeutic accumulative dose.
