After cataract surgery, how should I address dry eyes?

Doctor's Answers 1

Dry eyes are managed in a very similar way before or after cataract surgery.

In the first instance, take regular breaks from prolonged reading or near work, and adjust the air conditioner to a warmer setting with low fan speed.

In addition, using artificial tears regularly is very helpful. If cataract surgery was recent, it would be good to use preservative-free types like Refresh Plus or Tears Natural Free.

Punctal plugs (inserted by an eye doctor) can also be considered in more severe cases where artificial tears are required for relief very frequently.

What are the best ways to take care of a patient after a cataract surgery?

After cataract surgery, the most important tips are: 1. Remember to instill post-surgery eyedrops consistently and regularly as prescribed. 2. Prevent any 'dirty' or contaminated water from entering the eye (for example, swimming pool water). 3. Avoid dusty or 'smoky' places or wear protective eye-wear if you should need to be exposed to such environments. 4. Avoid rubbing your eyes because you don't want to irritate your healing wound. 5. Try to avoid strenuous exercise in the first week to allow optimum healing of your wound. 6.

How safe is cataract surgery if I have myopia?

Myopia refers to the situation where light rays are focused in front of the retina and spans a spectrum from mild to severe. It can also have several different causes, but most commonly is due to an elongated eyeball. Some kinds of cataract can also cause increasing myopia by themselves. Myopia, by itself, does not necessarily affect the safety of cataract surgery. For experienced cataract surgeons, performing cataract surgery safely (without complications) even in very high myopes is not particularly difficult.
