Thank you for your interesting question. Microgynon is a widely used contraceptive. Meaning that if you have been taking it regularly as per prescribed by your doctor, you should be protected from pregnancy.

That said, even though you might be fully following the instructions, there is still a small chance of getting pregnant.

This could sometimes be related to:

  • The weight of the patient (ie > 59kg)
  • Taking antibiotics and other medications that may interact with the Pill.

If you are super paranoid about pregnancy, you can consider using 2 methods combined, or using an IUD/implanon.

Perhaps you can discuss your options with your GP/Gynae.

How likely am I to get pregnant if I use microgynon regularly?

There's a very similar question on Microgynon usage, and chances of pregnancy here. Essentially, you are protected from getting pregnant after 7 days of consistent use of birth control pills. Consistent usage means that you’re taking the pill every day. If taken correctly, Microgynon protects against pregnancy 99% of the time. This means that less than 1 of 100 women will get pregnant with perfect use of the pill.

How can I give birth naturally if I am overweight?

In general, there are a few considerations that we will look at for natural birth in overweight mothers: 1. Stage of your pregnancy 2. Size of your baby 3. Position of your baby 4. Presence of existing medical conditions or complications such as diabetes, position of your placenta etc. Of course, if you are in the pre-pregnancy stage and planning for a child with the goal of delivering naturally, then it is highly advisable to kick-start a weight loss programme.
