Are birthing preparation classes necessary?

Doctor's Answers 2

The decision as to whether to attend birthing classes really depends on individuals. on the whole though, although it is not compulsory to attend, it may be useful for the majority of couples especially if it is their first time. some patients who have not delivered before may feel that it would be helpful to relieve their doubts, questions or anxieties.

Others may feel that this is not necessary because their gynaecologist has already gone through the birthing process with them in detail. Others may also feel that attending these classes may actually increase their anxiety and they would rather not attend.

There are many antenatal classes around. some are run by hospitals while others are run by private companies.

If you intend to attend these classes, it is important to pick one in which they tell you that facts rather than try to sell you their services or products.

I would recommend birth classes for first-time mums as they would help you be more aware of what to expect doing labour. Secondly, some preparation is of value, as it might help you make better choices during labour.
