Are carbon peels or the Fotona Starwalker laser more effective for whitehead and acne reduction?

Doctor's Answers 1

There have been no studies comparing both head to head. Because I use both, I'd share my experience about them.

The Starwalker uses a long pulse Ndyag whereas other laser machines that do carbon peel usually uses a quasi-long pulse Ndyag. The long pulse Ndyag goes deeper and has even been shown to help with facelifting. The quasi long pulse in the carbon peel can also reach deep to control the oil glands, but does so with the help of a layer of carbon (black carbon attracts more energy and amplifies the quasi long pulse to simulate a true long pulse effect).

I prefer to use the Starwalker because I don't need a layer of carbon and the mess to generate a true Ndyag long pulse beam. Without a layer of carbon, I can also clearly see what I am treating underneath and vary the laser settings if necessary.

As a side note, many places offer a carbon peel and show gimmicky videos of blasting carbon off the skin, but don't run through the heating quasi long pulse step. It is that quasi long pulse step that controls acne, whiteheads and oil glands, so make sure that is not missing in your treatment!

Hope that was useful and all the best!

Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. There are several treatments for your acne scars. You have mixed types of acne scars consisting of box-car acne scars, rolling acne scars and a few ice-pick scars. I routinely use a combination of energy-based devices (CO2 Fractional Lasers, INFINI RF, Pico Fractional Lasers), Subcision, Rejuran and TCA Cross to treat acne scars. A few points to note regarding acne scar treatments in Singapore: 1. A Combination of Treatments are required for best results - there is no 1 perfect treatment that can treat all types of scars.

Which lasers are best for red and brown acne pigmentation on the face? (photo)

As inflammation from an acne breakout resolves, it may leave behind residual redness (post-inflammatory erythema, PIE), brown pigmentation (post-inflammatory pigmentation, PIH), or true scars (pitted or raised). Often times, a patient may have any combination of PIE, PIH and true scars. Developing new scars often have redness within them as well. Although PIE and PIH tend to resolve over time (as opposed to permanent true scars), these blemishes are understandably frustrating and treatment is commonly requested.
