Are multivitamins recommended for an otherwise healthy young woman?

Doctor's Answers 2

This is a common problem and certainly many people take supplements regularly. Unfortunately, the commercialization and relative lack of regulation in supplements means that companies can promote use even if there is no absolute clinical need.

Also, we cannot be sure what will happen with long term use as supplements rarely go through the rigorous safety checks that required from prescribed medications.

Often the best "supplements" are adequate rest, exercise and a good diet.

If you are concerned about specific symptoms, it might be worth attending a general check-up or going for a screening such as what we offer to athletes and the general public.

During this, you can discuss your concerns in more depth and specific blood tests can be organised to look for deficiencies - after which focused supplements can be provided.

Its always good to consult someone before taking things, often we don't need additional pills and portions other than the core elements I mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

If you have concerns about her health and nutritional status, it will be good to seek an evaluation with a medical doctor. Some blood tests may be ordered.

Should I consume multivitamins?

When it comes to nutrition, it is always best to start with your diet, with nutrient supplements as a last resort. Good and proper nutrition can be obtained from a balanced diet which includes fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources, and healthy animal fats.

This balanced diet will help to solve issues in weight control, health, appearance, and energy levels. You can refer to the website of the Health Promotion Board for advice on planning your meals and having a healthy diet.

What are the different types of multivitamins and its side effects?

Women’s multivitamins would usually consist of vitamins A, B, C, and D. Diarrhea may occur as your body tries to adjust to a new substance in its digestive tract.

Constipation may occur because of iron, folic acid, and calcium ingredients in your multivitamin. Nausea has also been reported. Some patients also talk about the discoloration of their stools.

How long does one need to take multivitamins and folic acid for when pregnant?

Folic acid should generally be taken prior to conception and in the first trimester in particular as the neural tube is still forming. Folic acid is important for prevention of neural tube defects. It is also important in women with diabetes and on antiepileptic medication to prevent neural tube defects. There is some conflicting evidence in the possible role of folic acid in reducing the risk of autism.

For a healthy 50 year old man, which regular heart screening tests are required, and how often are they necessary?

As with any vital equipment which is needed on a daily basis, our heart too requires regular servicing and maintenance to keep if functioning well. The average life expectancy in Singapore is close to 84yrs old. At 50yrs old, one would have 34 more years of life ahead of them. Our aim is to keep patients healthy and be able to enjoy more years of healthy living. Regular screening allows patients to detect diseases early, hence allowing early intervention and treatment. Having a heart screening once a year can help pick up potential diseases sooner and hence treatment can be initiated earlier.
