Can a C02 fractional laser or Infini RF remove a hypopigmented burn scar? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 2

Thank you for your close up photo of your hypo-pigmented burn scar.

Fractional CO2 Lasers or INFINI RF can be used as part of a combination of treatments for removing hypo-pigmented scars.

This being said, Fractional CO2 Lasers or INFINI RF are more effective for depressed, atrophic scars like box-scar/rolling acne scars.

Hypopigmentation after burns is due to the dysregulation of melanin production after injury to melanocytes. Hence, topical treatments are also important to assist with re-pigmentation.

To get best results, multiple sessions of a combination of lasers and topical treatments are key for re-pigmentation of a hypo-pigmented burn scar.

Hope that this helps!

Warmest regards,

Dr Justin Boey

Hypopigmentation after a burn is usually due to the destruction of the melanocytes. Treatment for this condition is not easy as there is a lack of melanocytes to restore the pigmentation. As my colleague has pointed out uses of various devices may improve the pigmentation with a combination of a particular type of filler injection called Rejuran - which contains Salmon DNA and possibly can help aid in repair.

Alternative a more invasive and cheaper way would be to have the scar excised under local anesthetic. This would result in a small linear scar and over time would return to your natural surrounding skin pigmentation.

Are there any side effects to regular Kenalog Shots for acne?

I agree with the answers by Dr Winston and Dr Israr. Intralesional injections are mainly recommended for acne cyst. As previously mentioned, frequent steroid injections can caused skin thinning and atrophy and if this happens it may be irreversible! There are many other effective treatments to get the acne under control like oral antibiotics and isotretinoin. So speak to your dermatologist and tell her your concerns and discuss if these other options are suitable for you.

How effective is fractional Co2 laser vs Infini RF for acne scars?

Good questions! I agree with Dr Chua’s reply on the pros and cons of Fractional CO2 lasers versus Infini RF. In addition, I would like to address your question on the ideal length of time between subcision and Infini RF treatments. The ideal interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This is to allow for adequate skin recovery. Hope that this answers your questions!
