Can a dental implant placement cause numbness in my other teeth, gum, or jaw?

Doctor's Answers 1

Yes, it can. Implant placement can actually numb your jaw if an implant is placed onto a nerve.

In your lower jaw, there is a big nerve running through. If you hit that nerve, that nerve can go numb.

Your face will not droop, it’s not a motor function, but you can feel a very strange sensation -- like after you go to a dentist and they inject your jaw and it feels a bit numb.

An implant can cause permanent numbing. That’s why it’s very important for your dentist to do a preoperative evaluation with x-rays or 3D scans to see where that nerve lies.

What are some side effects of getting dental implants?

It depends on how big the surgery is. If it’s done in a very straightforward manner, say, you’re just putting in one dental implant on very good bone, then you’d hardly feel anything. It’s kind of like the side effects you feel after something less than an extraction. Because you’re basically just putting a pin into your bone. You could feel almost like there’s nothing, perhaps just soreness.

Is it safe to go for an MRI if I have a dental implant?

Yes. It’s definitely safe. It doesn’t affect the MRI. But if you have a lot of dental implants, what can happen is that your MRI can actually come out with a lot of scattering. Maybe if let’s say you have like 12 implants, your MRI will look really bright because these titanium implants are really opaque and they come out white. But as long as your doctor knows that you have dental implants, those can be factored in when they are looking at it. It’s definitely not dangerous.
