Can a nursing mother drink alcohol or DOM if she is breastfeeding?

Doctor's Answers 2

Hi,

In general it is best to avoid alcohol if you are breastfeeding.

However, if you have to drink some (because your confinement lady or mother-in-law is nagging you to death!), then take just a little bit after you have breastfed.

This way, most of the alcohol would have been metabolised by the time your next breastfeeding session comes around 3 hours later.

DOM is an alcohol infused with herbs, so try to avoid it in the first 2 weeks after delivery. Subsequently some people add it to cooking. This way most of the alcohol would have evaporated during the cooking process, leaving very little to be passed on to baby via breast milk.

As alcohol can pass from your breast milk to the baby, it is advisable not to consume any alcohol while you are breast feeding if you can resist the temptation.
