A woman who has not had vaginal sex can choose whether she wants a transvaginal or transvaginal ultrasound. If a woman with an intact hymen prefers, her doctor can perform or arrange for a trans-abdominal ultrasound scan for the patient rather than a transvaginal ultrasound, so as to avoid breaking of the hymen. However, a transabdominal ultrasound may have some limitations compared to the transvaginal approach, especially for clear visualisation of pelvic pathologies."
