Can PRP be combined with a hair transplant for better results?

Doctor's Answers 1

Good question. I receive this question a lot from my patients too.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is not allowed for Aesthetic treatments in Singapore

Unfortunately, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is not allowed for Aesthetic treatments in Singapore. Hence, PRP is not allowed to be combined with hair transplant in Singapore. PRP treatment is only allowed for acute muscle and tendon injuries in Singapore.

PRP: Promising Results that need long-term validation

There are promising results internationally for the use of PRP before and after hair transplant to improve the results of hair transplant. However, there is a lack of standardisation of PRP protocols so the results can be very varied. This being said, there are many hair loss specialists who still swear by the results of PRP.

Regenera Activa: HSA, FDA approved regenerative medical hair loss treatment in Singapore

Apart from PRP, the next frontier in hair loss treatments (apart from medications and FUE hair transplant surgery) is Regenera Activa. Regenera Activa is a minimally invasive treatment that is approved by major health regulatory authorities internationally (US FDA, CE Europe, Singapore HSA).

Micro-grafts are extracted from the back of your scalp and is injected into the areas where there is hair loss. These micro-grafts, which contain regenerative cells, repair your scalp and stimulate hair growth by strengthening your follicles.

This is a single treatment with visible results that last 1 year (even up to 3 years for some).

Regenera Activa hair growth

You might want to consider Regenerative Activa before and after hair transplant instead.

Hope that this helps!

What is the cause and treatment for male hair loss? How much does hair transplantation cost in Singapore?

It does indeed sound like male pattern hair loss, due to male hormone (testosterone). And unfortunately you’re right – finasteride works by blocking testosterone, which results in all the side effects like erectile dysfunction etc. I’d recommend starting with a topical shampoo called Minoxidil – that has minimal side effects, although hair regrowth tend to be thinner. Hair transplant is indeed a lot cheaper in Thailand, but you have to be aware that follow-up care will not be possible. I recently had a friend come to me to check out his scalp after the op in Thailand.

Is PRP injection available for acne scarring in Singapore?

PRP at the present moment is not available in Singapore. It does help with acne scarring though, and you might have to go to neighbouring countries to do the treatment (including Malaysia). Having said that, you can consider Rejuran/skin boosters/microneedling that can help in a similar fashion. Your 2nd question on which is better — it depends on the severity and type of scars. But usually Fractional laser is the backbone of laser therapy. So consult your doctor early to discuss the available options.
