What are some possible complications which might arise due to untreated pinched nerves?

Doctor's Answer

Pinched nerves or nerve compression syndromes, affect the functions of the hands and fingers. Some examples are such as:

  • carpal tunnel syndrome,
  • cubital tunnel syndrome and
  • radial tunnel syndrome.

Depending on which nerve is affected, the end result of untreated and persistent compression of any nerve is the same:

  • loss of sensation,
  • loss of movement,
  • power,
  • muscle wasting,
  • joint contractures and
  • permanent deformity.

Although these severe signs and symptoms do take time to develop, they are irreversible once they occur. Hence it is important to flag it out to your doctor if you think that you have any of these syndromes. Pinched nerves should be relieved or released as soon as possible to prevent any of these poor outcomes.
