Did my dentist do a less thorough cleaning if cleaning only took 20 minutes instead of 30?

The only objective way to know if you have had a thorough cleaning is to have plaque disclosure done. Plaque disclosure uses a special dye that only sticks to plaque (a sticky mass of bacteria known as biofilm).

Plaque is normally clear or tooth-coloured so it can be very difficult to see. The dye is dispensed in chewable tablets or as a gel that has to be painted on to the teeth, then rinsed with water to distribute it. This allows visualization of the plaque so that your dentist can clean more effectively. So perhaps this time, your teeth were cleaner and your dentist didn't need to spend as long cleaning your teeth.

What are the lessons that could be learnt from working at the COVID-19 quarantine zones?

I think the most important lesson that we can pick up from here is that the disease is really contagious. It’s no joke. Our government is scared, I mean many governments are scared, and there is a reason for them to be scared. I think the contagiousness of the disease is something that is more apparent when you are actually there, when you are seeing sick patients. I think that is something that has brought it home.

Are the terms 'cleaning' and 'check-up' different when visiting a dentist?

The word "cleaning" means a thorough scaling (removal of hardened tartar deposits on the tooth surface with either ultrasonic, hand instruments or both) and polishing (stain removal, smoothening of rough filling edges, polishing of old fillings/crowns etc). A "check-up" usually means a visual and radiographic (xrays) examination to 1. Confirm the presence of dental health 2. Diagnose the presence of *subclinical* *(before symptoms are present)* dental disease such as tooth decay, gum disease 3. Determine the extent/severity of current dental disease 4.
