Costochondritis is caused by inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs and the breastbone, called the costosternal joints. This uncommon condition can trigger a stabbing, aching pain that's often mistaken for a heart attack. Very often, the etiology is not known, but it can result from trauma, eg physical strain, lifting heavy weights or strenuous activity, and arthritis. Even severe coughing can cause costochrondritis.

The main symptom of costochrondritis is chest pain, which may be sharp or dull ache. It tends to be aggravated by deep breathing or coughing, and pressing on the rib or chest can make you feel tender and even swollen. However, people having heart attack often say they feel chest discomfort rather than chest tenderness. They describe it as feeling squeezed, chest tightness, or even pressure. If you have sudden chest pain, it is still always ideal to have it checked out by a doctor to make sure your heart is healthy.

What treatment methods are there for my swollen ball of foot?

Thanks for contacting us about your mum. Sounds like she is quite troubled by the symptoms in her foot. Dr Ethan has provided a excellent synopsis of the various causes and treatments available for metatarsalgia. This is probably one of the most common causes for foot pain and can be troublesome to treat. However, pain under the ball of the foot can be caused by other issues. There can be soft tissue bruising from trauma, a bony injury from an acute or stress event, swelling around nerves, tendon issues and so on.

Can pre-exercise screening help prevent heart attacks while exercising?

Thanks for your question and I am sorry to hear about your anxieties. In general exercise is a good preventative measure for many of the risk factors for cardiac disease such as hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia and diabetes. It can help with the onset and limit the impact of these conditions. If you are concerned about your risk, might I suggest a pre-participation screening (PPS). This involves a thorough medical history, clinical examination and appropriate investigations.
