Does Zerona Lipolaser kill fat cells, and are the results permanent?

Doctor's Answers 2

Zerona uses Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to achieve fat reduction by targeting fat cells. In fact, it causes immediate emptying of targeted fat cells, and can give noticeable results almost immediately after treatment. However, it is important to note that because it doesn't cause permanent death of fat cells, it is believed that the recurrence of the fat cells are greater than that of other devices that use Macro-focused ultrasound, radiofrequency or fat-freezing.

This is consistent with the lack of long term studies with LLLT (no peer reviewed studies that have a follow up duration more than 12 weeks). In comparison, market leaders of fat sculpting like Coolsculpting has multiple peer reviewed papers, some of which have 5-10 year follow up duration!

Fat reduction devices like Coolsculpting and Liposonix were also shown in a review paper to be the only devices which accomplished significant reductions with only a single session. The results of Zerona were studied in the same review paper and found to be significant, but also much less efficacious. It did however score well in terms of adverse events and comfort - potentially the most comfortable fat reduction technology available. It is from these parallels that some would echo the no-pain, no-gain adage.

I use a wide mix of non-invasive fat reduction technologies at my practice. I also wrote about fat freezing in Singapore and why it is still my favourite.

Hope this helps!

To answer your question, Zerona can give noticeable results almost immediately after treatment, but it doesn't cause permanent death of fat cells.

Other body contouring treatments like Cryolipolysis and Radio-frequency have more long-term research studies to show permanent fat removal.

For example, Cryolipolysis treatments have multiple research studies to prove 20-25% fat reduction in a single treatment session.

A few tips regarding non-surgical fat removal treatments:

1. Not every technology/treatment is suitable for everyone

Although Cryolipolysis (eg Coolsculpting, Clatuu, Z-Lipo) has the most research studies, not everyone sees similar results from this treatment. Some patients still see sub-optimal results.

This is because every patient's body shape and fat distribution is unique.

Cryolipolysis works best for patients who have easily pinchable fat.

2. Medical-grade fat removal may require several sessions

Beyond the marketing hype of "results in a single session", many patients still do require several repeat treatment sessions for the same area to achieve desired results.

3. Technology drives results - and so does experience

There are many clinics offering similar technology and services.

What makes the difference is the experience of the body contouring team in body assessment and performing the treatment.

With more skilled body assessment, treatments are more cost-effective and safer for you.

I use a wide mix of non-invasive fat reduction technologies at my practice including cryolipolysis and non-contact & contact radio-frequency because certain treatments might be more suitable than others for each patient.

Hope this helps!

How effective is fractional Co2 laser vs Infini RF for acne scars?

Good questions! I agree with Dr Chua’s reply on the pros and cons of Fractional CO2 lasers versus Infini RF. In addition, I would like to address your question on the ideal length of time between subcision and Infini RF treatments. The ideal interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This is to allow for adequate skin recovery. Hope that this answers your questions!

Is PRP injection available for acne scarring in Singapore?

PRP at the present moment is not available in Singapore. It does help with acne scarring though, and you might have to go to neighbouring countries to do the treatment (including Malaysia). Having said that, you can consider Rejuran/skin boosters/microneedling that can help in a similar fashion. Your 2nd question on which is better — it depends on the severity and type of scars. But usually Fractional laser is the backbone of laser therapy. So consult your doctor early to discuss the available options.
