What are the early signs of a miscarriage?

Doctor's Answer

In general, the typical symptoms of a miscarriage are:

  • pelvic pain
  • vaginal bleeding
  • discharge of tissue
  • discharge of fluid

The most common sign would indeed be vaginal bleeding.

However, in early miscarriages, there may not be any signs at all (asymptomatic). Early miscarriage is then usually diagnosed during routine antenatal visits to the gynaecologist in which the presence of the fetal pole is seen but without any heartbeat.

This can then be correlated with serial BHCG levels (pregnancy hormone) which should show a decrease over the next few days. Despite that, in some cases, there may be mild pelvic discomfort and/or vaginal spotting rather than frank bleeding.
