General principles
In the treatment of eczema in babies, it follows the same general principles as treating eczema in adults.
1. Use gentle, soap-free cleansers if possible to minimize irritation to the skin
2. Use moisturizers regularly at least 2 to 3 times a day.
3 Minimize scratching and rubbing of the skin as this can aggravate the rash.
4. Avoid warm and dry environments which can worsen the rash
5. Wear comfortable clothing eg. cotton clothing
Treating eczema directly
When eczema is very red and inflamed, a topical steroid cream is often prescribed to suppress the inflammation. In babies, milder topical steroids should be used and stronger steroids are generally avoided as the skin is thinner in babies. There are also non steroidal creams like calcineurin inhibitors that can be prescribed.
Babies' and children's skin are thinner than that of an adult, so they are more sensitive to external irritation, such as from harsh skin products.
If eczema persists, it would be good to see your doctor or dermatologist for a proper assessment so that the appropriate treatment can be prescribed to control eczema.
