How effective is Differin gel (adapalene) in treating severe cystic acne? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 2

From your photo, you have mild to moderately severe inflammatory acne rather than severe cystic acne.

Differin gel will certainly be effective in your treatment. Especially when combined with topical benzoyl peroxide. Doctors may also choose to give you a short course of oral antibiotics such as doxycycline to control the inflammation more rapidly.

After successful control of your acne inflammation, it will be useful for you to continue the application of Differin gel nightly as maintenance therapy. This is to prevent relapses of your acne issue.

Other than Differin, doctors may recommend topical tretinoin as it is also effective for acne treatment and maintenance.

Are acne patches really effective for cystic acne?

Hi, Most pimple patches are actually hydrocolloid wound dresssings to assist in wound healing. Some may contain mild levels of salicylic acid that helps dry out pimples. Acne patches may have a role in aiding skin healing together with proven medical treatment. However, cystic acne is due to deep intense inflammation that will cause significant scarring if not treated quickly and effectively. For cystic acne, the most effective treatment is oral isotretinoin. It is strongly recommended that you see a doctor early to commence on effective treatment in order to reduce scarring.

How to apply Differin, Clindamycin and Niacinamide correctly for acne?

Hello,It seems like you have new pimples quite frequently. In that case apart from topical treatment you may want to consider oral medicines such as oral doxycycline, erythromycin or even isotretinoin (a Vitamin A derivative) to minimise the occurrence of new pimples. The intense inflammation from pimples can lead to scarring so I always believe that preventing acne occurrence is important in acne treatment, apart from treating existing spots.
