How does Fotona 4D compare with Thermage and HIFU?

Doctor's Answers 1

Fotona 4D

The Fotona 4D is a unique protocol that uses 4 different lasers to target different layers of ageing, from deep cheek fat and retaining ligaments, to the surface fat layers, deep skin and also surface skin layers. It is the only laser system in the world that makes use of various non-ablative lasers that can reach down bone deep to tighten different layers.

Thermage

Thermage is a branded monopolar radio-frequency device that delivers electromagnetic energy into the different layers of skin to induce heat to cause tightening. However since skin impedance is usually much lower than the tissues below it, RF applied on skin has maximal heat in epidermis/dermis. Consequently, Thermage (just like other contact RF devices) gives good results with skin texture and rejuvenation but has little effect on lifting deep sagging tissues. Additionally, because skin impedance varies from person to person, the treatment can have unpredictable results and these risks need to be properly explained to every patient.

HIFU

HIFU uses focused ultrasound at different layers to tighten sagging tissue at various depths. This is different from the above two options in its own way - it focuses ultrasound energy at a specific depth to micro ablate skin or deeper layers. This can be especially useful in cases of unwanted fat such as bulky sagging faces or bulky body areas that need slimming.

Suitable combinations of these 3 minimally invasive techniques you asked about have been used to provide more obvious and lasting results for patients. It is useful to learn more about how each of them works to understand what treatments you are going for and how they can help you.
