Can I still get a thread lift if I experience PDO thread rejection?

Doctor's Answers 2

In my many years of thread lifting, I have never had a case of “PDO thread rejection”.

PDO is a safe medical biopolymer that can be metabolised by our skin into water and carbon dioxide. It’s also used in sutures in surgical operations etc.

Do you mean that you have had thread extrusion or excessive inflammation from contact with PDO threads? That would be a totally different issue together.

Thread extrusion is due to poor anchorage of threads, or placement too near mobile areas like the peri-oral area. Excess inflammation is possible if:

  • the thread is placed too superficially,
  • if the quality of the thread is sub-standard,
  • or if the patient has autoimmune conditions.

I have not experienced any PDO thread rejection in my practice. PDO threads are usually free-floating, unanchored threads which may get dislodged, unlike anchored threads.

However, if you are worried about the material involved causing the rejection. There are a number of reliable brand threads in Singapore that are made of PCL and PLLA. So you may consider using these instead.

How can thread lift be removed?

There are special hooks that you can use to pull out one end of the thread and just pull the hooks to retrieve the thread. If you want to redo or replace the threads, I usually recommend to wait for a week or so, before replacement of new threads. This is done under local anaesthesia.

When is it safe to get a rhinoplasty after a prior nose thread lift?

The answer to your question depends on the type of material for the threads you are going to insert into your nose. PDO threads can last to about 6-9 months. As such, it is safe to have a rhinoplasty 9 months after a nose thread lift unless threads of other materials are put in. PCL threads, on the other hand, would last about 18-24 months. Alternatively, the surgeon can stack the implant on top of the threads before they are dissolved but that’s not advisable. As always, do consult your doctor before making any decision before going for more than one aesthetic treatments.
