Oral steriods such as prednisolone have strong anti-inflammatory properties and should only be taken under close medical supervision.
Serious side effects may occur if not used with caution. Usually only short courses of a few weeks are given and in most patients will not cause any serious problems.
If oral steroids are used at doses that are too high, or for too long a period of time, patients may:
- develop weight gain
- moon face
- increased hairgrowth
- muscle weakness
- hypertension
- diabetes
- cataracts etc.
Your doctor will make sure you have no underlying conditions that make it unsafe for you to take prednisolone before starting you on the medicine.
They will keep a close eye on you when you are taking the prednisolone to ensure that you have no side effects, and that your blood pressure and blood sugar are normal.
Most patients are gradually tapered off the dose to prevent a rebound of your original condition.
