How can I prevent a permanent scar after an abrasion?

Doctor's Answer

Sorry to hear you have had a fall and a subsequent abrasion. I would suggest you see a dermatologist regarding your raw red patch to ensure optimal healing.

Firstly it is important to ensure no infection develops by using an antiseptic solution to clean and an antibiotic ointment to apply for good wound healing. It is important to allow the scab to form and fall off naturally instead of picking it off.

Once the wound has scabbed over and the crusted area has fallen off, you can start using a scar gel to encourage optimal wound healing.

The red patch will often turn into a brown patch in Asians due to the the melanin release in our skin after injury. During the healing process I will strongly encourage you to keep the area out of the sun so as to reduce the degree of this darkening.

During this time, medical grade potent lightening creams can be used to help lighten it further.

If the abrasion is very shallow and heals well, the skin has a very good chance of a full recovery with no subsequent scarring. If the abrasion is deep, there is a chance of permanent scarring. In some areas such as the knees or elbows, raised hypertrophic scars may even develop.

Fortunately we are able to improve these scars with a combination of laser and steroid injections and often treat these with excellent results at our clinic.

Good luck and hope your abrasion heals very soon!

Warmest regards
