How can I prevent haemorrhoids during pregnancy?

Doctor's Answers 1

Pregnancy predisposes women to haemorrhoids because of the increase in pregnancy hormonal effects and pressure of the pregnancy on the vessel walls. This can often be uncomfortable and distressing for women.

One way to prevent the incidence or to reduce the size of the haemorrhoids would be to:

  • consume more green leafy vegetables
  • take prune juice
  • increase fibre intake and
  • rehydrate adequately.

Other methods including taking stool softeners like lactulose which reduces the need to strain during defecation as the stools are softer.

Women can also take Daflon medication in an attempt to shrink the haemorrhoids and therefore advert unnecessary surgery in some cases.

How can I differentiate between anal fissures and haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids are found in the upper anal canal where there are no nerves that sense pain. Anal fissures occur at the outer edge of the anus which senses sharp pain. Therefore, anal fissures tend to cause sharp pain when you pass stools. It tend to cause painless fresh bleeding when you pass stools. Sometimes, it is difficult to differentiate the two conditions because both can cause fresh bleeding during the passage of stools. Anal fissures will usually cause pain and the amount of bleeding is small (seen as streaks of blood when wiping the anus with toilet tissue).
