How can I prevent haemorrhoids during pregnancy?

Doctor's Answer

Pregnancy predisposes women to haemorrhoids because of the increase in pregnancy hormonal effects and pressure of the pregnancy on the vessel walls. This can often be uncomfortable and distressing for women.

One way to prevent the incidence or to reduce the size of the haemorrhoids would be to:

  • consume more green leafy vegetables
  • take prune juice
  • increase fibre intake and
  • rehydrate adequately.

Other methods including taking stool softeners like lactulose which reduces the need to strain during defecation as the stools are softer.

Women can also take Daflon medication in an attempt to shrink the haemorrhoids and therefore advert unnecessary surgery in some cases.
