How can one differentiate acne from basal cell carcinoma? (photos)

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

There are several useful resources such as this, where you can read more about Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC).

BCC is more likely to occur if you are Caucasian. Your age also places you in the low risk group.

The photos are not enough to make a clear diagnosis. We also need to take into account:

  • The rash location
  • Pattern of distribution
  • Size of the lesion
  • History of any changes that may have occured since the first time you noticed the lesion and
  • Whether it is associated with any symptoms like itch or pain or even if it is painless

Above all, it is important to have whatever lesions you are worried about inspected by a medical professional. Since many rashes look similar one another, a biopsy (tissue sample taken for further analysis) may be required to confirm or rule out the diagnosis.

The internet has a lot of information but when taken out of context can lead to unnecessary alarm or even lead one into a false sense of security.
