How can someone who has autoimmune disease safely try for a baby?

Doctor's Answer

Pemphigus vulgaris is an autoimmune skin condition where the skin produces antibody against components of the skin (desmogleins) resulting in easy blistering of the skin. This condition usually requires a long period of oral immunosuppressive medications.

If you are considering pregancy, it is best to be at a time when the disease is stable and under control as you do not want to escalate treatment while you are pregnant. You have to inform your dermatologist of your intention to conceive.

Your doctor can then advise you on what immunosuppressive medications you can be on and what medications you have to be off and adjust your medications accordingly.
