How can TCM help with vertigo and nausea? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Vertigo refers to the feeling of having a dizzy sensation. In TCM, it is categorized as "眩晕“(xuan yun). Patients often feel dizzy and get better when they close their eyes or when they rest. In severe cases, they may feel that their world is spinning, causing them to lose balance, feel nauseous and/or vomiting.

In TCM point of view, dizziness is often related to the phlegm and dampness accumulated in your body. The phlegm and dampness cause your qi and blood in the body not being able to flow smoothly to your head, thus causing dizziness. When the phlegm and dampness affect your qi and blood circulation in your stomach, it can cause your stomach qi to go upwards, leading to nausea or vomit. Blood stasis can also affect the circulation of qi and blood in the body. Other reasons causing vertigo include qi and blood deficiency, liver wind etc.

TCM treats patients in a holistic approach. Your vertigo and nausea symptoms may be due to the same reason. Looking at your tongue, it may seem that you have phlegm and dampness in your body. However, more details would be needed, such as other symptoms and pulse taking, to give a proper diagnosis for your condition. You are advised to seek consultation with a licensed TCM physician to alleviate your symptoms. The most common TCM treatment method would be herbal medicines and acupuncture. The treatments administered are prescribed according to each patients' constitution and condition. Physicians may also advise on a change in your lifestyle and diet according to your condition.

Who should I see for Vertigo problems in Singapore?

Dr Ethan has provided a good summary on the possible causes of vertigo. Vertigo is a type of giddiness whereby a patient feels that the room is spinning or he/she is spinning. If this is what you experience, then you should see an ENT Specialist first. Most vertigo are due to peripheral causes (meaning there is a problem with the balancing system of the ear). Central causes of vertigo (due to a problem in the brain) are fortunately much rarer.

How is vertigo diagnosed and treated in Singapore?

I hope you are well now - giddiness can be very debilitating and dramatically affects one's daily functioning due to their unpredictability. If your giddiness had been a sensation of the room spinning, that would be vertigo. If the giddiness worsened with changes of position, the most common cause would be benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV). However, giddiness is actually a very complex symptom which can be caused by many different system disorders in our body. The giddiness symptom is not very specific, and people describe it in different ways and experience it differently.
