How do doctors find out if acne is due to hormonal imbalance? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 1

Hello Siti,

Hormonal acne usually affects the lower 1/3 of the face (jawline/ chin) and it can be related to menses.

From what you have described (increased facial hair and irregular periods), you may want to see a gynaecologist to rule out a condition known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) first and it can have other health implications.

Hormonal acne can be treated with the usual medications and antiandrogens

Topicals:

  • Retinoids
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
  • Glycolic acid
  • Salicylic acid

Orals:

  • **Oral Contraceptive Pills
    **
  • Spironolactone
  • Antibiotics
  • Isotretinoin

Speak to a trusted doctor to find out more.

Is the Discovery Pico Laser suitable if I am still having active acne?

Hi, Thank you for the question. This is a good question that i've received from several patients. Discovery Pico Laser is one of the brands of Picosecond Lasers. Picosecond Lasers are suitable even while you are still having active acne. In fact, it can help to reduce active acne. It works by killing acne-causing bacteria and controlling oil production. Over the long term, it can help to reduce brown acne marks. In addition to picosecond lasers, also do consider antibiotic creams and intralesional steroid injections for your active acne. Hope that this helps!

Which lasers are best for red and brown acne pigmentation on the face? (photo)

As inflammation from an acne breakout resolves, it may leave behind residual redness (post-inflammatory erythema, PIE), brown pigmentation (post-inflammatory pigmentation, PIH), or true scars (pitted or raised). Often times, a patient may have any combination of PIE, PIH and true scars. Developing new scars often have redness within them as well. Although PIE and PIH tend to resolve over time (as opposed to permanent true scars), these blemishes are understandably frustrating and treatment is commonly requested.
