How do I differentiate between eczema and contact dermatitis (photo)?

Doctor's Answers 1

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin and often presents with red, itchy rashes on the skin. There are various types of eczema and these include atopic eczema, discoid eczema, seborrhoiec dermatitis and asteatotic eczema.

Contact dermatitis is also a form of eczema. In contact dermatitis, the eczema is due to exposure of skin to a substance that causes either an irritant or allergic reaction, resulting in an eczema. The history of what was applied to skin and the subsequent development of a rash is important to determine if the rash is due to a contact dermatitis.

A patch test can be done to determine the type of ingredients that an individual may be allergic to. This is useful to confirm a diagnosis of allergic contact dermatitis and subsequent exposure to offending substance can be avoided.

Why does sweating cause an itchy red rash? (photo)

Thank you for your question. There are various causes of itchy bumpy rashes and these include eczema, bite reaction and scabies. Heat and sweat can aggravate eczema and make the skin more itchy. Excessive scratching can also make the rash worse. However, if the rashes are still persistent, it will be good to see your doctor or dermatologist again to re-evaluate the rash to endure a proper diagnosis and treatment.

How long does pityriasis rosea take to clear up?

Thanks for the question. Pityriasis rosea is a condition that typically presents with scattered red rashes on the trunk and arms and thighs which may be scaly. The face is often spared in this condition. There is a herald patch, often a larger patch that appears before the rest of the rashes, but this is not seen in all cases of pityriasis rosea. The face is also a very unusual site to get the herald patch. So overall, it is really difficult to comment if your rash is truly pityriasis rosea without seeing your rashes.
