How do I fix my gummy smile without using Botox? (photo)

Doctor's Answer

A good friend of mine and periodontist (specialist in gum treatment), Dr Marlene Teo, wrote this excellent article on 5 ways to fix a gummy smile. Here's the link to the article - https://www.human.com.sg/5-ways-fix-gummy-smile/

The treatment options would depend on the diagnosis - the reason causing the gummy smile.

From your photo, it does seem like it could be a combination of an excessively long upper jaw together with excessive gums. The solution to a long upper jaw would be jaw surgery to reposition the upper jaw upwards, which is a more invasive procedure. You will also need to go through a short period of braces together with jaw surgery in order to fit the teeth better after surgery. It would be advised to see an oral maxillofacial surgeon for a detailed assessment so they can advise you better.

A compromise between jaw surgery and botox would be gum surgery to increase the height of the teeth. A periodontist would be able to help you out with that. The charges would range from $1800-3000 for the upper front 6 teeth.

Hope this helps, all the best and Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and your family.

Warm regards,

Dr Geraldine Lee
