How do I get rid of a raised scar on my knee? (photo)

Doctor's Answers 4

Beside the option of injecting steroid, the hypertrophied scar may also benefit from fractional CO2 laser to remodel the tissue, to improve on the texture and look. The colour of the skin is the one concern that is more difficult to recover. You may also want to know about the potential risks of both steroid injection (thinning of skin or a depression if injected wrongly) and Fractional CO2 laser (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, redness, infection) before doing the treatment.

The number of sessions sessions need for either treatments may vary between individuals. In some situation, the treated hypertrophied scar over an area of frequent movement like you knee may grow back again, although it is less likely than a keloid scar.

Your scar looks more like hypertrophic scar which means the best way to reduce it is by injection of insoluble steroids.

The scar will look and feel smoothier but total removal of such scars will not be possible.

This appears to be a hypertrophic scar. Steroid injections have been shown to cause hypertrophic scars and keloids to regress, mainly by decreasing collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis, and reducing the inflammatory process in the wound by decreasing fibroblast proliferation. Studies have shown Response rates from 50% to 100%.

The injections can be done in the doctor’s office and it will be a relatively simple procedure. A few injections may be required for best results. Hope this helps!

Your hypertrophic scar will benefit from the following treatments:

Corticosteroid injections to reduce the size of your scar.

Fractional CO2 laser to improve skin texture via dermal remodelling.

The number of sessions sessions needed for both treatments varies between individuals. Please consult a trusted doctor for more information!

Is the fractional radiofrequency, CO2 laser or erbium laser more effective for deep acne scars?

With regards to your question: Fractional CO2 lasers generally penetrates deeper than Erbium lasers Fractional CO2 lasers also generally penetrates deeper than Fractional RF devices EXCEPT Microneedle RF machines that can reach a depth of 3. 5mm (only in some machines) which in this case will have a greater penetration depth as compared to Fractional CO2 machines.

How many sessions of fractional laser is required for mild to moderate acne scars?

With regards to your question, The number of sessions really depends on 2 main factors: How your skin reacts to the treatment. For some individuals, good results may be seen after 3 sessions whilst others may require 6 or even more sessions. The depth of penetration of the laser. If mild settings are used then more sessions may be required and results may not be as satisfactory. Additionally, as Dr Chua CY has pointed out, combination treatments usually yield more effective results. I personally do not usually just stick with one kind of treatment modality to treat acne scars.
