How does applying toner help in skincare?

Doctor's Answer

Hi Tiffany

The simple answer is that it depends on your skin. The long answer is that it is more complex than that. That because the term 'toners' has no real fixed definition.

Toner, commonly know as a skincare product, is usually used after cleansers. I myself see toner as a second cleanser, as majority of toners has alcohol in its formulations, and work as an astringent. In addition, there are newer formulations of toners out in the market that claim to soothe sensitive skin and even moisturize dry skin.

Because of the many forms that ‘toner’ can exist in, it can be confusing to patients what they should use when it comes to skincare.

From my experience, home-use skincare should be kept as simple as possible. If you have oily skin, the usual toners (astringent-type) as we know it can be used without much problem. These toners should be used after your cleansing routine, before you apply any moisturizers, or sunscreen.

If you have certain skin issues or conditions you want to get addressed, a toner may or may not help you. The key is in the active ingredients and the formulations within the toner. I will suggest to see a skin doctor who understands various skin types, and how to manage them.

Hope that helps!

Best regards,

Dr Heng
