How does TCM help with amenorrhea in teens?

Doctor's Answers 1

Amenorrhea is the absence of menstruation during the reproductive years.

Lifestyle changes, mental and emotional stress, excessive exercise or excessive weight loss can cause secondary amenorrhea.

Health conditions such as underactive thyroid and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also lead to absence of menstruation.

It is important to find out the underlying cause before treatment can proceed.

TCM believes that menstruation occurs monthly due to the proper functioning of the internal organs, especially the kidneys, liver and spleen, which in turn allows good production and smooth flow of blood and qi in the body. If the body is undergoing excessive stress or has underlying health condition (as mentioned above), the organs will be weak and not function well. This will in turn affect the body's blood and qi, leading to irregular or even absence menstrual cycle.

I recommend the patient visit a qualified TCM physician to assess her condition (Do bring along any results from your gynecologist if you have any).

TCM herbal medication and/or acupuncture are common treatment methods to treat amenorrhea and irregular menstruation. Treatment helps improve organ function, balance internal qi and blood, to bring menstruation back to its normal cycle. Physician will also advice on appropriate lifestyle and diet change if required.

Hope this helps!

What TCM treatments are available for gastric problems causing bloating and stomach discomfort?

From the TCM point of view, gastric problems are closely related to the function of spleen and stomach. These two organs are responsible for the transformation and transportation of the food that we consume. When the spleen and stomach is weakened, it can lead to many digestive issues such as bloated, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach-ache, ingestion etc. In TCM, the most common treatment for these internal problems would be herbal medicine. Herbal medicines are prescribed according to each patient's body constitution.
