How does Ultherapy compare against fillers like Belotero for removing facial lines such as the nasal labial fold and tear trough?

Doctor's Answer

Firstly Ultherapy is the trademark procedure of a HIFU device called Ulthera.

There are a few other well known HIFU devices in Singapore like Ultraformer III and the Sygmalift but treatment using these devices generally are referred to as HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) for non-surgical skin tightening or non-surgical facelifts.

These treatments are used to stimulate collagen renewal as well as contraction of tissue at different layers of the skin by using handpieces of different penetration depths. The most common handpieces used are the 2mm, 3 mm and the 4-4.5 mm ones. The deepest one is actually targeted at the SMAS ( Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System ) which is like a fibromuscular layer. Treatment of this layer can induce a contraction of the fibromuscular layer thus simulating a lifting effect.

Belotero is the trade name of a range of HA (hyaluronic acid) dermal fillers that is HSA registered for sale in Singapore.

Nasolabial folds and tear trough are different in terms of aetiology and thus the treatments to correct them will be different.

Nasolabial folds can be due to loss of skin elasticity as well as a pseudo ptosis effect due to the loss of structural support due to loss of deep facial fat

There HIFU treatment will improve the nasolabial folds due to the skin lifting / tightening effect. Fillers can also be used to correct the volume loss in the Deep cheek fat thus improving the nasolabial folds. Of course, these two treatments can be used to complement each other.

With regards tear trough, this is actually alike a depression line in the under eye are that extend from the medial canthus of The Eye to the mid pupil line. As it is actually a depression due primarily to volume loss in the midface it is better corrected with the use of dermal HA fillers.

Hope this helps and hopefully, you will be able to find a doctor you are comfortable with to help you!
