Hi Helen K,

Thank you for your question which would help other patients.

I am a family doctor and I would NOT use fucicort for pimples.

1) Fusidic acid (an antibiotic) does not work very well against the bacteria in pimples.

2) Betamethasone (a steroid) might worsen the infection as well as worsen the acne. In fact long term use of this alone might also cause the acne.

It would be prudent to visit a GP or dermatologist if you want to prevent permanent scars on your face.

It is easier to treat them early rather than try to treat the scars.

Hi Helen K

I have personally not opted to use Fucicort for inflamed pimples.

Anecdotally I have had a couple of patients who have used it selectively for the bigger pimples, and they swear by it. But I would agree with Dr Paul that the risks of skin thinning over a prolonged use, and acne aggravation at a later stage doesn't make this such a great idea.

Pls consult your doctor early instead. Oral medications such as antibiotics or Isotretinoin might be needed for you

How can I prevent pimples on my back?

Dr Theng has answered you wonderfully. And yes hormonal acne can be a common cause of back acne. You may need to advise us further on whether you might be on any meds that throw your hormones out of whack. You can treat it like face acne, and I have used a combination of acne topicals and chemical peels/laser treatments for my patients with back acne conditions.

Does 2.0% fusidic acid help to clear up cystic acne? Are there any side effects (such as more breakouts)?

I would stick to Epiduo and Oratane (please complete the course as well). I would not recommend topical Betamethasone and Fusidic Acid as they are not recommended 1st-line treatment options for acne at all. There are other topical antibiotic creams to consider that are more effective against the bacteria in acne such as Clindamycin and Erythromycin. For cystic acne, sometimes it may need to be extracted/ drained and injectable steroids would be more effective at arresting the inflammation and swelling as opposed to topical creams. Hope that helps. All the best!
