How effective is radiofrequency treatment for masseter reduction?

Doctor's Answers 2

Thank you for your excellent question that will help patients with large masseter muscles who are considering a longer term solution for a slimmer jawline.

How effective is radiofrequency treatment for masseter reduction?

Published studies indicate that the efficacy of radiofrequency masseter reduction is pretty much equivalent to botulinum toxin masseter reduction after six months. Both can produce approximately 50-60% reduction in the thickness of masseter muscles. However, unlike botulinum toxin which only lasts for six months, the effect of radiofrequency masseter reduction is sustained even after 12 months. However, there haven't been sufficient long term studies published to conclude that the reduction is permanent.

Jaw BOTOX can slim the face

Masseter reduction (in this case using botulinum toxin) can produce rather impressive results in the right patients (source)

Radiofrequency masseter reduction is not commonly done in Singapore as it usually has more downtime in the form of swelling and carries higher risks of (potentially serious) complications such as:

  • Bruising and hematoma
  • Fluid collections
  • Late bleeding
  • Infections
  • Injuries to surrounding structures such as salivary duct, facial nerves

Most aesthetics doctors would prefer to use botulinum toxin as there is little to no downtime, minimal risk of complications and much less technically demanding.

Do consult a doctor who will be able to explain the pros and cons of each to you in detail.

Hope this helps!

Warmest regards,

Dr Wan Chee Kwang

Radiofrequency is not the right treatment for master reduction.

The masseters are a pair of muscles. If you're talking about muscle bulk reduction, injection of botulinum toxin will be the correct treatment. However, I will recommend adding energy device treatment like Ulthera to the jowls after botulinum toxin to the masseters to prevent excessive sagginess at the jowls/cheeks for individuals over 40 years of age.

For radiofrequency treatment, it can be used to reduce cheek fats with treatments like AGNES as the radiofrequency needling treatment helps to burn some of the cheek fats away. However, this usually requires 3 sessions to give good results.

How effective is fractional Co2 laser vs Infini RF for acne scars?

Good questions! I agree with Dr Chua’s reply on the pros and cons of Fractional CO2 lasers versus Infini RF. In addition, I would like to address your question on the ideal length of time between subcision and Infini RF treatments. The ideal interval between treatments is 4-6 weeks. This is to allow for adequate skin recovery. Hope that this answers your questions!

Is PRP injection available for acne scarring in Singapore?

PRP at the present moment is not available in Singapore. It does help with acne scarring though, and you might have to go to neighbouring countries to do the treatment (including Malaysia). Having said that, you can consider Rejuran/skin boosters/microneedling that can help in a similar fashion. Your 2nd question on which is better — it depends on the severity and type of scars. But usually Fractional laser is the backbone of laser therapy. So consult your doctor early to discuss the available options.
