How is perioral dermatitis usually treated in Singapore?

Doctor's Answers 1

Hi,

Perioral dermatitis presents with acne-like lesions around the mouth that may be precipitated by using topical steroids over the affected area.

A close evaluation by your doctor is essential to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out other conditions that affect the region around the mouth such as contact dermatitis, acne agminata, etc.

Upon confirmation of the diagnosis, periorbital dermatitis is treated very much like inflammatory acne with a mild cleanser and a course of doxycycline over the next 4-6 weeks. After the active inflammation subsides, post-inflammatory erythema and hyperpigmentation is common and will take several more weeks-months to fade on its own.

Avoid application of steroids over the affected area even if there is an itch as topical steroids will aggravate perioral dermatitis. The itch may be treated with a mild facial moisturizer and antihistamines and will go away once the inflammation subsides.

Hope this helps!

Dear Ms Kay,A positive sentinel lymph node biopsy is certainly something to worryabout. Once diagnosed as positive, it usually indicates the presence ofcancer cells within the lymphatic system and suggests that the cancer ispresent and has also spread significantly. However, even with the presenceof cancer cells, the pathologist needs to determine what type of cancer itis by performing further immunohistochemical studies. These will revealmore information on the type of cancer and the possible origin.
