How long does teeth whitening last, and is it the same procedure each time to re-whiten it?

Doctor's Answer

Thank you for your enquiry about how long teeth whitening lasts. In my practice, teeth whitening is a procedure that is commonly sought after, and i get asked this question many times.

In short, there is no real fixed answer to your question. To give you a rough idea, teeth whitening can last anywhere from one week to two years! And there are many factors that can affect the effectiveness of the whitening procedure.

Currently there is a myriad of ways to whiten teeth, with products and procedures galore. Ranging from off the counter counter whitening toothpastes and teeth whitening strips to those take home teeth whitening kits sold online and promoted by social media influencers. Teeth whitening treatments are even offered by beauticians and therapists in spas and apartments! Finally, there are professional teeth whitening services offered by graduate dental surgeons in a licensed dental clinic.

This huge range of products and services can be confusing.

While the effectiveness of these different products and services may vary widely, oral habits also play a significant role in affecting how long the whitening procedure will last.

Heavy smoking, frequent coffee and tea drinking, and food pigments can cause teeth to discolour again rather quickly.

In short, if you would like to have a better idea of the best way to whiten your teeth, please see your trusted dentist so that he can examine your teeth carefully before prescribing the best way to whiten them.

I hope my answer helps!

Kind Regards,

Dr Gerald Tan
