How much spotting after a period is normal?

Doctor's Answers 1

Normal menstrual bleeding usually lasts 3-8 days so any bleeding or spotting beyond this time is considered abnormal and you should seek a consultation with your gynaecologist.

He can then run a series of tests to see what could possibly be the cause if there is one at all. This can range from a pelvic examination to hormonal blood tests, pap smear and an ultrasound of your womb and ovaries.

Depending on what abnormality is found, he can then recommend an appropriate treatment for you.

Will switching contraceptive pills help with heavy spotting between periods?

It may be helpful if we explore some of the causes for this intermittent bleeding - sometimes termed as "breakthrough bleeding". If the pill is not taken on a daily/regular basis, the temporary drop in the level of hormones can lead to intermittent bleeding. If you are on any long term medication (eg some antibiotics or anti-epilepsy medication) that increases hormonal metabolism/ breakdown, this can lead to a lowered level of the contraceptive hormone and this can also lead to bleeding.

How do doctors diagnose the cause of spotting after a period?

Consistent and regular mid-cycle bleeds may be as a result of Ovulation. Other irregular episodes of bleeding may be due to local cervical lesions like polyps or inflammation of the cervix of bacterial or viral origin. These need to be assessed by your Gynaecologist.
