How should I choose between metal or ceramic braces?

Doctor's Answer

Both metal and ceramic braces work in the same way. They differ in terms of cost (metal is cheaper), size (ceramic brackets tend to be bulkier) and appearance.

I have not found ceramic braces to stain in my patients. You may notice stain accumulating around the brackets, but the brackets themselves are stain resistant. The surface stains can be polished away if they become obvious during the course of your treatment. If you have been fitted with plastic brackets, then the porosities in the plastic may absorb stains more easily. True ceramic brackets are stain resistant.

I only advise patients to choose ceramic brackets if they are concerned about very visible brackets and are prepared to spend more since ceramic brackets are more costly to replace. Metal brackets can be reused and are generally cheaper.

I wouldn't be too worried about staining if you do choose to go for ceramic brackets.

Hope this helps!
