How do I get rid of dyshidrotic eczema on my hands?

Doctor's Answer

Hi,

Dyshidrotic eczema presents with deep seated vesicles (tiny water blisters) on the palms and soles of the skin and are very itchy. This is a variant of eczema that is from within the body, not due to external causes like allergens or irritants. Thus, there is no cure for this skin condition. In my clinical experience, stresssful situations tend to aggravate the condition.

The principle of treatment is the use of lots of moisturisers and potent steroid creams. If the condition is debilitating and affects your work or life, a short course of oral steroid can be given to reset the condition, whilst waiting for the creams to work slowly.

Any for of endogenous eczema on the hands will predispose you to irritant ecezma of the hands. So remember to use lots of moisturiser and wear protective gloves when exposed to detergents and other irritants.

Thank you.

Regards,

Dr Benjamin Yim
