How to heal an open sore at baby's genital area?

Doctor's Answers 1

An ulcerated haemangioma over the diaper area can be challenging to manage as you have rightly pointed out that this is an area that is prone to friction and trauma. The ulcer can be become infected or even bleed.

The ulcer should be cleansed gently and you can use the antibiotic ointment over the area. A non-adhesive dressing over the area may be helpful. B

The ulcer is often painful and taking some syrup panadol for pain relief with the dressing changes may be helpful.

If this is persistent or bleeds, you may wish to see a paediatric dermatologist eg. at NSC or KKWCH to see if the underlying haemangioma needs to be treated.

What is the best treatment for itch and eczema at the groin area?

Hi, thanks for the question. From your desciption, it does sounds like you may have scrotal eczema. This is often very itchy, and scratching the area will make the eczema worse. Your doctor would probably have prescribed you with a mild topical steriod cream. This will help to settle the eczema. Some antihistamines to relief the itch may be helpful too. Importantly, you should refrain from scratching the areas as this will make the eczema more persistent and recurrent.

What is an effective treatment for strawberry hemangioma in an infant?

Thank you for your question. I’m sure as a parent, having something diagnosed on your child can be the most frustrating thing ever. Your child is quite small at 6 weeks old, and depending on the size of the lump, most doctors will probably advice to monitor it at this stage. At a later stage, if it doesn’t go away, there are always other treatment options like laser or a medication called propranolol. But in summary, rest assured that if the diagnosis of strawberry hemangiona is correct, there are effective treatments for it.
