How to prevent or reduce Herpes Simplex Virus 2 outbreaks?

Doctor's Answers 1

Thanks for the question.

Herpes infection is caused by the herpes simplex virus, type I or type 2. HSV type 1is the main cause of cold sores and HSV type 2 is the main cause of genital herpes. Herpes infection presents with recurrent painful blisters and usually settles after 1 to 2 weeks.

Herpes infections tends to be recurrent as the virus resides in the nerves and can periodically reactive. It is most contagious when there are active blisters and sores and can spread by contact with the affected area.

Herpes infection is treated with oral antiviral medications which shortens the duration of the attack. Usually, herpes infection is treated when there is an active outbreak. In some cases where the attack is very frequent eg. every few weeks or monthly, it is possible to consider taking a suppressive course of the oral antiviral medication for a few months to prevent the outbreak of the herpes.

It is best for you to raise your concerns with your doctor or dermatologist for a proper evaluation and advise.
