How to remove old surgical scars? (photo)

Plastic Surgery Skin, Hair & Nails Orthopaedic Surgery

I fractured my ankle when I was 12, and had to have surgury with stiches. What would be the best treatment option for me to remove these scars? Thank you.

DOCTOR’S ANSWER (2)

Thank you for your photo. Your scar looks mature, and a little raised from the photo. You may achieve some improvement to the texture and appearance with a combination of fractional CO2 laser and steroid injections.

Usually 4-5 monthly sessions will be needed, and there is a risk of developing darkening of the scar during the treatment. It is best to seek an actual consultation so that your scar can be examined and you can discuss the risks and benefits with a trusted dermatologist or GP with experience in scar treatment.

Hope this helps!

Best regards

Hello fademyscars,

Thank you for your pictures. The scars look like hypopigmented mature surgical scars.

I would use an ablative laser to treat them, but you may not achieve complete scar clearance, and they come with certain risks.

If the scars are not too large or obvious, I usually do not recommend too much treatment.

Please consult your dermatologist or aesthetic doctor for a discussion on the pros and cons.
